The uncrewed mission was the ninth test flight of the nearly 400-foot-tall stacked rocket, which previously suffered similar fates in January and March. Developed to transport cargo and humans around Earth, to the Moon, and eventually to Mars, the Starship system remains central to Musk’s long-term space exploration goals.
According to a livestream aired on SpaceX’s website and social media, the first-stage Super Heavy booster exploded shortly after launch. The second-stage Starship experienced a significant fuel leak during flight, then spiraled out of control and disintegrated during reentry.
