Charanpreet Singh, a 23-year-old Indian student, was brutally attacked and left unconscious on a street in Adelaide. He was allegedly attacked and hurled racist abuses at by some men over a car parking dispute, according to reports.
Charanpreet Singh was allegedly told to “go away, Indian” and then repeatedly punched and left to die on the roadside. The incident took place near Kintore Avenue in the city centre on Saturday (July 19, 2025) night (local time).
Charanpreet Singh, who was in his car, said some men approached him, hurled racial abuses and attacked him without any provocation.
“I tried to fight back, but they beat me till I fainted.”
He suffered serious injuries, including brain trauma and multiple fractures to his face. He was rushed to hospital, where he remained under medical care overnight.
South Australia Police on Sunday (July 20, 2025) arrested a 20-year-old man from Enfield and charged him with assault causing harm. However, the rest of the attackers fled the scene and have not yet been identified. Police have appealed to the public for help in catching them.
The attack has sparked outrage among Adelaide’s Indian community and raised concerns about the safety of international students and immigrants in Australia.
Support for Charanpreet Singh is growing online, with many calling for stronger action against racial violence. Speaking from a hospital bed, Charanpreet Singh said the attack had deeply shaken him.
“When such incidents happen, you feel you should turn back,” he said. “You can change anything in your body, but you cannot change colour.”
South Australia Prime Minister Peter Malinauskas condemned the attack and called it unacceptable. “Anytime we see any evidence of a racial slur it is completely unacceptable in our state and inconsistent with the attitude of the majority of people in our community,” the premier said.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident and are examining CCTV footage from the area.
